Marin Cilic comments on destroying Daniil Medvedev at French Open

Former world No. 2 Marin Cilic was absolutely thrilled with the performance he delivered versus second-seeded Daniil Medvedev at the French Open.  Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal since 2018 after demolishing Medvedev 6-2 6-3 6-2.  Clay is Medvedev's weakest surface but still he was the favorite to win the match and no one could have predicted such an easy win for Cilic.  "It was an absolutely fantastic match from the first point to the last," Cilic said in an on-court interview, per the ATP website. "I enjoyed the atmosphere, enjoyed the night session here. I played incredible tennis — one of the best matches of my career from start to finish." Cilic dominated Medvedev The two players were tied to two games apiece after the opening four games, before Cilic claimed back-to-back breaks in the fourth and eighth games to win the first set in style. In the second set, Cilic earned the first break of the set in the sixth game to open a 4-2 lead.  One break of serve was enough for Cilic in the second set as he served out for a two-set lead in the ninth game.  After winning the first two sets, Cilic made a dominant start to the third set as he claimed back-to-back breaks and opened a comfortable 4-0 lead.  Medvedev served out the fifth game to finally get on the board in the third set but it didn't change much.  Two breaks of serve were more than enough for Cilic to win the third set and complete a routine straight-set win.  It was the fourth meeting between Medvedev and Cilic and the Croatian's first win over the Russian.  Cilic lost the first three meetings versus Medvedev but absolutely dominated their fourth meeting.  Next up for Cilic is another Russian as he is set to face Andrey Rublev in the French Open quarterfinal. Against Rublev, Cilic has two wins and four losses.  Cilic entered the Medvedev match with a losing record as well but still claimed a dominant victory.
